Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Art
Ljubljana, March 8 to 11 2017
With Gibanica, which has provided a biennial selection of the best contemporary dance productions of local artists and been considered the most relevant contemporary dance platform in Slovenia since 2003, this country’s capital will between March 8 and 11 2017 again become the focal point of the local dance production.
The programme of the 9th Gibanica has been selected by a three-member international committee composed of Angela Glechner (Austria), Artistic and Financial Director of SZENE Salzburg and Sommerszene festival, Suzana Koncut (Slovenia), a dancer and translator, and Eddie Nixon (UK), Director of Theatre and Artist Development at The Place, London. Among 44 applications, the committee has selected nine performances that will compete to win both a jury and audience awards. This comprehensive overview of dance art production in Slovenia will be valuable information for both the invited foreign selectors as well as interested local audience.
ARGUMENTATION OF SELECTORS
44 artists and companies applied for Gibanica’s 2017 edition, which is an impressive sign of the vitality of the Slovenian contemporary dance scene. Besides, these numerous applications displayed extraordinary aesthetic heterogeneity and diversity in this field, with artists coming from different backgrounds and with divergent working orientations. Therefore it seemed impossible to imagine Gibanica as a representative overview of the Slovenian contemporary dance creation, so we tried to expose those works that make a convincing artistic statement. It is very positive, in our opinion, that the format of a large number of pieces is larger form, which demonstrates the capacity of developing broader choreographic and esthetic concepts, in spite of quite evidently difficult material situations. Consequently, the presence of complex works with numerous participants presenting very different artistic issues enabled us to build a program with pieces of various dimensions and forms.
We hope that our selection mirrors the artistic variety and strength of Slovenian contemporary dance and provides both the local and international audience an inspiring overview of contemporary dance creation.
