THE GREAT BRILLIANT WALTZ

The solo debut of the Austrian dancer and choreographer Dagmar Dachauer tackles the music of both Johann Strausses in a contemporary dance context in the period of the Vienna Congress (1814/1815). The artist related the historical elements and their reminiscences with the political nature and legitimacy of her body. Considering that Strauss’ highly commercialized music comprises part of Austrian identity, Wunderbare Jahre [Wonderful Years] deals with the innate and controversial quality of national pride and its relation with the romantic, pompous, patriarchal, bourgeois, heroic and noble – as if we witnessed the comeback of Biedermeier. Consequently, the performance figures as a reflection of the personal [and contemporary] music as a constituent part of the national identity which represents temptation and challenge including in terms of physical expression.

Dagmar Dachauer is an Austrian dancer, choreographer, performer and dance teacher. She has studied dance at Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten/MTD (BA), P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels and the circus department of the DOCH (Dance and Circus University) in Stockholm. As a performer she collaborated with the dance group T.r.a.s.h, Luke Baia, Dominik Grünbühel, Kevin Trappeniers, Florence Augendre and others. In 2014 she won the DIORAPHTE Encouragement Award at Cinedans Festival for the dance film Treeo. Between 2009 and 2012 she organized the spiel festival in Austria. In 2015 she was the co-curator of Secret Hotel Landscape DialoguesSummer Lab in Mols (Denmark). She is the recipient of the scholarship of the Austrian federal chancellor and artist in residence at kulturRaum Klagenfurt.
