→ award of the expert jury for the best performance of Gibanica 2023, this year for the first time goest to two performances
Expert jury:
Roberto Casarotto (Italy)
Dries Douibi (Belgium)
Lea Loeb (Swiss/Argentina)
First and foremost, we as the jury want to express how impressed we were with the collectivity and solidarity present in the dance and performance scene here. We had the pleasure and privilege to get to meet artists and their practices, and we were surprised to see how closely linked and mutual inspiring the art scene is – quite literally, in all the collaborations, in the fact that the same musician appears in several of the presented projects, but also more philosophically, for instance, how sound and music are the driving force in the creation of dance and choreography of many of the pieces we came across.
Awarding a prize as an external jury in such a context can be fragile for it is artistic fabric, and that’s why we want first and foremost to celebrate the art scene as such. Therefore, we ask for a round of applause for all the artists who have presented their works in the past days, but also for the organisation and all the people who work in this precarious field.
We have a duty to award a prize, and being the responsible jury that we are, we have fulfilled our duty. For the first time, the prize will not be given to one, but to two projects. Not as a statement, but because this most correctly reflects the discussions of the jury and also honours the diversity of artistic voices in today’s Slovenian dance and performance scene.
The prize goes to
Irena Z. Tomažin, Jule Flierl: U.F.O.: HOMMAGE TO KATALIN LADIK
Production: Sploh Institute
Co-producers and partners: SOPHIENSÆLE (Berlin), Charleroi Danse Center chorégraphique de Wallonie-Bruxelles (Bruselj Brussels), PACT Zollverein (Essen)
The jury found the performance U.F.O. by Jule Flierl and Irena Tomazin outstanding on different levels: the political dimension and power of the voice, the physicality of the sound, and the philosophical reflections on voice, body and space, but also the historical research. We were impressed by the precise dramaturgy and rhythm of the piece.
and to
Beno Novak, Elvis Homan, Boštjan Simon: RESURRECTION 2.0
Production: Pekinpah
Co-production: Qulenium
The physical and acoustic bodies of the work generate spaces for imagination and sensory connections, celebrating movement, rhythms, and the special collaboration of the three performers.
